Lace Weight Yarn

Light as Air, Beautiful to Knit

Lace weight yarn creates delicate shawls, lightweight garments, and elegant accessories with beautiful drape. Whether you're knitting an heirloom lace project or holding mohair with another yarn to add softness and a gentle halo, you'll find thoughtfully chosen lace weight yarns for every style of knitting.

Learn More about Lace Weight Yarn

Lace weight yarn creates some of knitting’s lightest and most elegant fabrics. As the finest of the standard yarn weights, it is often used for shawls, wraps, lightweight sweaters, delicate accessories, and other projects where softness, drape, and open stitch patterns can take center stage.

Lace yarn can be worked across a wider range of needle sizes than most other yarn weights. A lace shawl may be knit on larger needles to create an airy, open fabric, while a sweater or top may be worked more densely for greater structure. Because the results can vary so much, it is always best to follow your pattern’s recommended gauge rather than choosing needles based on the yarn weight alone.

Many lace weight yarns are spun from luxurious fibers such as mohair, silk, alpaca, and fine wool. Mohair-and-silk blends are especially popular for their soft halo, luminous color, and featherlight warmth. They are beautiful when knit alone, and they can also be held together with yarns of other weights to add softness, depth, and subtle texture.

Our own Loop Posy is a hand-dyed mohair-and-silk yarn that shows just how versatile lace weight can be. Used on its own, it creates a delicate, ethereal fabric; carried alongside another yarn, it adds color, warmth, and a soft, glowing halo.

Although lace weight yarn may seem intimidating at first, it can be surprisingly enjoyable to knit. The fabric stays light in your hands as the project grows, and the finished pieces are often comfortable enough to wear throughout much of the year.

At Loop, we carry a thoughtful selection of hand-dyed and natural-fiber lace weight yarns chosen for their softness, drape, color, and ability to create beautiful, wearable fabrics.
