Maxima is hand-dyed by women artisans working in Manos del Uruguay cooperatives. Manos was founded in 1968 to create jobs, independence, and opportunities for rural women while helping them remain close to their families, communities, and traditions.

Manos del Uruguay is a nonprofit organization and has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009. Its Fair Trade model supports the artisans who make its yarns while helping sustain traditional craft skills in Uruguay.
