Marla is hand-dyed by women artisans working in Manos del Uruguay cooperatives in rural Uruguay. Manos was founded in 1968 to create employment, independence, and opportunities for women while allowing them to remain close to their families, communities, and traditions. Today, the organization is made up of cooperatives, and the artisans themselves are owners of the company.

Manos del Uruguay has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009. Its commitment to Fair Trade supports the artisans who make the yarn while helping preserve Uruguay's longstanding craft traditions.
